Nuclear opacities occur in spontaneous hypertensive rats of the Okomoto strain, and nuclear cataract has been observed in hamsters.
Inherited nuclear cataracts also occur in Sprague-Dawley rats. Unilateral nuclear cataract has been reported as age-related in Sprague-Dawley rats. Spontaneous nuclear cataracts are rare in rats but do occur in Sprague-Dawley rats. Nuclear cataract can occur, especially in rodents, and is more common in mice than rats.
Nuclear sclerosis must be differentiated from nuclear cataract. With the continuous production of lens fibers, there is constant compression of the lenticular nucleus, and the optical density of the nucleus increases slowly with age (i.e., nuclear sclerosis).
